Built on the UNISOC V527 platform, the RU311 supports both 5G RedCap and LTE Cat.4. This dual-mode approach targets devices requiring connectivity that exceeds basic low-power IoT specifications but cannot justify the complexity, power profile, or bandwidth of full 5G enhanced mobile broadband.

In 5G RedCap mode, the RU311 provides peak downlink speeds of up to 226 Mbps and peak uplink speeds of up to 120 Mbps, while also offering robust LTE fallback capabilities. The company positions the series for industrial gateways, security and surveillance equipment, aftermarket automotive products, energy applications, and MiFi devices.

The distinction between cellular tiers is critical for hardware design. A surveillance endpoint sending video upstream has different transmission requirements from a battery-operated sensor, yet it may not need a full-featured 5G modem. RedCap occupies this middle ground, sitting broadly between LTE Cat-4 or Cat-6 and full 5G NR products.

RedCap was introduced as part of 3GPP Release 17, with lower device complexity and cost among its core design goals. 3GPP has also outlined eRedCap under Release 18 as a further step toward lower-cost, mass-market IoT equipment.

Modem performance represents only one aspect of a hardware upgrade decision. Manufacturers must also consider motherboard changes, interface adaptation, certification, software validation, and production scheduling. Market conditions are beginning to favor mid-tier 5G options. Counterpoint Research reported that RedCap module shipments rose nearly 800% year over year in Q2 2025, albeit from a low base and with demand still concentrated in China. The same research found that 5G represented 8% of cellular IoT module shipments during the quarter.

Although network availability remains a gating factor for widespread deployment, operator activity has expanded. The GSA noted that 30 operators across 21 countries were investing in RedCap as of April 2025, with commercial launches including China Mobile, China Telecom, China Unicom, Dito, STC, and T-Mobile US.

The general manager of the MTC Business Unit noted the RU311 broadens the available RedCap portfolio as different IoT products seek connectivity suited to their specific business requirements. Fibocom and UNISOC also plan to continue collaborating on RedCap products and ecosystem development.

The RU311 arrives as RedCap moves from trials into early commercialization throughout 2025 and 2026.
