Huntsville residents are asking city leaders and Meta to disclose more information about the technology company’s expanding hyperscale data center campus, including its expected electricity and water consumption, environmental footprint, and long-term economic contribution.
At a Wednesday night meeting organized in part by Empowering Women's Causes, residents questioned how Huntsville approves data centers and evaluates their effects on nearby communities. According to the Yahoo report, the discussion covered power demand, water use, noise, jobs, environmental studies, and what might happen when a facility reaches the end of its useful life.
Meta broke ground on the Huntsville campus in 2018, and the facility opened in 2021. A second phase is now under construction. It will add two buildings and bring the overall campus to about 2.5 million square feet.
That footprint makes the debate relevant well beyond northern Alabama. Hyperscale facilities support cloud applications, social platforms, and increasingly compute-intensive artificial intelligence workloads. Their economic benefits can include construction activity, skilled operational positions, and local grants. Their physical demands, however, can reshape utility planning for decades.

“There are no regulations that regulate data centers, their water consumption, their power consumption, their noise pollution, quality of life,” the organization's president said.

“We’d like to make sure that they are fulfilling this promise,” the resident said.
Available estimates put long-term operational employment at roughly 100 to 300 positions. That can be meaningful, especially when combined with construction spending and millions in grants to schools and nonprofits. Still, data centers occupy substantial land and consume major infrastructure resources while employing fewer permanent workers than many manufacturing projects of comparable physical scale.
