The video, which has since been removed, was part of a broader social media trend in which creators record prank encounters or pickup lines involving members of the public. The subject said she did not know she was being filmed and was not asked whether the footage could be published.
“I had no say,” she said. Other women subsequently reported similar incidents, including videos uploaded through burner accounts that left the subjects unable to identify who recorded them.
Unlike a visible smartphone, which often provides a clear social warning even when no formal request for consent is made, smart glasses look ordinary. Their cameras can remain pointed at someone throughout a natural conversation, raising questions about the effectiveness of a recording indicator if the person in front of it does not notice or understand it.
The head of Meta-owned Instagram stated that the platform takes action against content that exploits, harasses, or invades the privacy of people being filmed.
“If you’re posting content that is taking advantage of people and harassing them, like a lot of these pickup line kind of videos that we’ve heard of and seen recently, then we’re going to take the content down,” the executive said. “We don’t want people to be surreptitiously taking videos of other people and harassing them and then posting them on our platform.”

Social platforms also face pressure to detect and remove nonconsensual harassment faster. Otherwise, smart glasses risk inheriting the same social resistance that surrounded Google Glass, only now with more capable AI, easier distribution, and a much larger audience waiting online.
