Qualcomm Technologies Inc. has selected five winning startups in the Vietnam Innovation Challenge, or QVIC, putting $255,000 in total prizes behind a new group of Vietnamese technology ventures.

The winners were announced during the InnoEx 2026 Business Innovation Forum, held in Ho Chi Minh City from August 19 to 20. The company uses QVIC to identify and support small and medium-sized enterprises developing products around its mobile platforms and related technologies.

This year's finalists presented artificial intelligence applications spanning edge computing, the Internet of Things, robotics, and healthcare. The wider program also covers 5G, smart cities, and automotive technology, targeting sectors where computing is moving closer to devices, vehicles, and industrial equipment.

That technical mix matters. Running AI at the edge can reduce dependence on continuous cloud connectivity, shorten response times, and give developers more control over sensitive data. Those benefits can be particularly relevant for factory systems, medical devices, robots, and urban infrastructure. The engineering challenge, however, is tougher than simply connecting an application to a hosted AI model. Products need to operate within tight limits on power, memory, and processing capacity.

QVIC is also encouraging participants to turn engineering work into defensible intellectual property. Startups associated with the program have submitted over 101 patent applications to date, supported by patent-filing incentives. Patent volume alone does not establish commercial success, but it can strengthen a startup's position when approaching manufacturers, strategic partners, and investors.

Vietnam's AI segment is attracting capital even while the country's wider startup market remains restrained. The Vietnam Innovation and Private Capital Investment Report, compiled by NIC, BCG, and VPCA, found that Vietnamese AI startups raised $80 million in 2024, an eightfold increase from the amount recorded in 2023.

By comparison, Tracxn's Vietnam Tech Annual Report 2024 indicated that technology startups across Vietnam raised $120 million in 2024, a 38% decline from 2023. Differences in methodology mean the figures should not be treated as a single, directly comparable dataset. Still, the direction highlights that AI stood out as funding conditions weakened elsewhere.

Vietnam already has visible participants in the category, including AI Hay, Kompato AI, and VinBigData. Programs such as QVIC aim to broaden that field by helping technically capable teams move beyond prototypes and convert promising research into products that enterprises will deploy and purchase.

The deputy minister of science and technology highlighted QVIC's expansion beyond conventional startups to include university research teams and spin-off companies. This approach can help transform research results and ideas into market-ready products and businesses that contribute to Vietnam's economy. For universities, that route can offer a practical bridge between laboratory work and commercialization.

Demand conditions are supportive. Gartner reported in 2024 that generative AI was the most frequently deployed AI solution among organizations it surveyed, with 29% already using it. Gartner also forecast that 40% of generative AI solutions will be multimodal by 2027, up from 1% in 2023. That shift favors products capable of processing combinations of text, images, audio, video, and sensor data, including many edge-oriented applications.

Commercial buyers will still expect evidence of reliability, security, data governance, and measurable operating value. Startups serving healthcare, automotive, or smart-city customers may face particularly demanding procurement and testing cycles. Governance approaches informed by the NIST AI Risk Management Framework or ISO/IEC 42001 can help young vendors organize oversight as deployments expand.

The vice president and president of Qualcomm South East Asia, Australia, and New Zealand stated that the finalists reflected Vietnam's talent base, entrepreneurial activity, and developing deep-tech ecosystem. While the $255,000 prize pool is relatively modest beside institutional venture rounds, the combination of technical support, patent incentives, and exposure to commercial partners is designed to provide long-term value beyond the initial award money.
